Auditioning at Merely Players

If the stage is calling your name, welcome! We’re so happy to have you! We know auditions can be intimidating to even the most seasoned of actors, so we’ve created a quick and easy guide to auditioning at Merely Players. No two audition processes are the same, so show-specific information can be found after the general audition information.

General Audition Information:

  • Who: YOU!

  • When: Depends on the show! Check our Facebook page or website for dates and times for each show’s auditions.

  • Where: All auditions will be held at Lincoln Community Center in West Mankato. Enter in through the main doors and walk down the main hallway – you’ll see us at the end of the hall!

  • How: When you get into Lincoln, you’ll check in with our incredible audition staff who will ask for your name, COVID vaccination card, and take your picture. While you wait to go into the theater, you’ll fill out a form all about yourself – your contact information, what shows you’ve previously been in, your availability until performances, if you’re interested in any additional volunteer opportunities… easy stuff! When you hand your form back to the audition staff, take a second to breathe - you got this! They’ll call your name when it’s your turn and you can head into the theater and knock the directors’ socks off.

  • What: Each show is different, but for plays you will typically be required to cold-read excerpts from the show. You might have to read the same section more than once while other actors are substituted in for different parts (that’s for the director to see how you work with different people). Musicals typically have the cold-read that plays do, but you’ll be asked to sing and dance as well.

Callbacks: Some shows will ask you to come back a day or two after auditions for a callback. Directors sometimes want to see certain people read with people who were at a different audition or watch you sing or dance something specific. You will be contacted by either the director or the assistant director if you are called back and what (if anything) you need to prepare. If you don’t get called back, don’t worry, it doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be cast!
